Italian Panettone

Panettone are made once a year in Italy in the months of September and October so they are fresh for each holiday season. They last about 10 months before they start to dry-out and are no longer able to be sold. They are not available in the months of August and September.

Gift-wrapped traditional Italian Christmas fruit cakes originated in Milan in the fifteenth century. Traditional panettone is flavored with candied orange, citron, and lemon-zest as well as raisins, which are added dry and not soaked. Eaten traditionally with a cup of espresso or glass of amaretto. Italian panettone is generally less sweet than the chocolate panettone which is a very popular American Christmas panettoni bread.
